Foundation Barossa’s Community Grants program opens on 19 July 2019.  Grants are available up to $5,000 for projects that benefit the wider Barossa community in the areas of Community Development, Heritage and Environment.

Last year Community Grants went to charities such as ‘Backpacks for SA Kids’. This organisation assists over 3,000 South Australian children every year by putting together backpacks containing items to give to children who, through no fault of their own, have been put in the situation of having to leave home and have no possessions to call their own.

The backpacks provided help to relieve some of the stress and anxiety children face when they are removed from their family, often in traumatic situations and without the opportunity to take any personal belongings with them as a result of neglect, abuse or family violence.

“Backpacks 4 SA Kids was lucky enough to receive $1500 from Foundation Barossa in 2018. “said Rachael Zaltron, Founder Backpacks 4 SA Kids. “These funds helped us supply 30 full backpacks for children who have had to leave in emergency circumstances.  Often these kids leave with just the clothes on their backs, to be able to give them something that is just theirs, that no one can take away from them allows them a small piece of control in an often traumatic and ever changing environment”.

Grants are available to organisations with charitable status with Item 1 DGR status and tax concession charity status (preferred but not essential) for projects that benefit the wider Barossa community.

To apply for the 2019 Foundation Barossa Community Grants please review the Terms & Conditions and complete an application online here.

We know that the Barossa is a community that looks after its own. We’re a family.  This June we’re asking your family to be part of our Dollar a Day Appeal.

Funds from this appeal will go towards causes such as ‘Back to School’ Vouchers.  The Back to School initiative is part of the Rural Education Australia Program and Foundation Barossa has partnered with the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) to provide these vouchers since 2008 .

The Back to School program is a practical, positive program that makes a real difference in the lives of children by providing $50 gift vouchers to students in need.  These $50 gift vouchers are redeemable for items such as school uniforms, clothing, shoes, school bags and stationery items necessary to start the school year.  This is much more than a $50 gift, it is about social inclusion & resilience, confidence and building morale in disadvantaged children.

Michelle Barnes, Principal Tanunda Primary School said “We have been fortunate to receive Back to School Vouchers from Foundation Barossa for a number of years, and they have been very gratefully received by our families.  They make a significant difference to parents who are struggling financially and enable them to buy items for their children that they otherwise couldn’t afford.  It’s always great to be able to give a voucher to family in need.”

“We know that there are many families across our community that need our help. We have already raised over half our target for the Dollar a Day Appeal and would like to say a big thankyou to the Barossa community for their support on behalf of these families in need” said Annabelle Elton-Martin, Foundation Barossa Executive Officer.

Families, individuals and organisations wishing to support the Dollar a Day Appeal can donate via https://dollar-a-day-for-a-family-in-need.raisely.com/ or on our website or contact Annabelle directly on info@foundationprod.wpengine.com.

Foundation Barossa encourages philanthropy within the heart of our community to support people and causes close to our homes and hearts.

And this year, we want you to ask you be a part of our efforts.

Can your family help a family in need?

James Fox
Thomas Scholar 2014
Bachelor of Viticulture & Oenology

“I am currently at Rockford Wines where I have been working since I finished up with uni. I’ve been fortunate enough that they allow me to work for them while I’m in Australia, but also allow me to travel and work in other wineries around the world to gain experience. It’s the perfect scenario to have a home base like Rockford, it’s a great place to work.

2017 and 2018 were big years for me post-uni. I did vintage at Rockford at the beginning of 2017 (which itself was a marathon!) then headed off to Spain for vintage there. After that I travelled across Europe, London, America and Mexico before coming home for vintage 2018. I was lucky to get the opportunity to work at Yalumba as the night-time red winemaker which was a very big step and also the best learning experience for me. After that I came back to Rockford for the winter months before jet setting once again to America for vintage.

Now I’m back at Rockford organising my visa to go and work in France for the second half of this year – I won’t die wondering that’s for sure!

The scholarship was the best thing for me to just take the stress away from being able to afford to live in Adelaide. It gave me the chance to take one less shift at work and to spend that time where it was necessary for me.”

Thanks James for the update – it certainly sounds like you are making the most of your opportunities!

April Zimmermann
Cellarmasters Scholar
Bachelor of Law and Psychological Science

“I am currently in my fourth year of Bachelor of Law and Psychological Science (5 year concurrent degree). I will have completed my Psychology degree at the end of this year, 2019 and will be finishing my law degree by December 2020.

I have been working in a volunteer role at JusticeNet SA for over a year now which has given me industry experience assisting those in SA unable to afford legal representation. This will give me a boost when applying for competitive full-time legal work after graduating. Receiving the Cellarmasters Scholarship allowed me to have this regular ongoing commitment without being impacted negatively financially in regards to being able to pay my rent/ bills etc. Whilst I have maintained casual work throughout my degree, the security of having the scholarship in times where I am unable to work my regular 2-3 shifts alleviated a lot of stress during those 3 years in which I was awarded the scholarship. I am very thankful to both Cellarmasters and Foundation Barossa for their support during my first three years of university education.”

Thanks April for keeping in touch – and best of luck for your remaining studies.

Lisa Rohrlach
Thomas Scholar 2012
Bachelor of Agricultural Science

“I am currently based in Charleville doing relief/short contract teaching in outback south-west Queensland.

This takes me to school west as Quilpie, east to Mungallala, and north-west to Longreach and schools in between. This has give me a wide range of experiences from working in an 8 student Primary School R-6, schools with R-10 that have splits of R/1, 2/3, 4/5/6 and 7-10 also schools with all year levels, just primary, or just secondary schools.

Mungallala is a school where all the kids come in very tired on Mondays as they will be out helping their parents with mustering, branding, bore and lick runs etc. on weekends.

I also work as a casual at Charleville Bilby Experience when available in an education/ tourism/ bilby husbandry role. While we do get lots of tourist through, we have been able to link areas of the experience to Australian Curriculum standards this and the fact kids can learn about the stars and WW2 with other tourist attraction means we do get lots of schools through from the coast, as far south as the NSW /QLD border and west of Charleville. ”

Thanks Lisa – it sounds like you are having some great experiences!

Semra Arksali
Cellarmaster Scholar 2014
Bachelor of Education

“At the end of this year I will be a qualified teacher of Years 3-10 which is exciting.

The scholarship for me was invaluable! It meant I was able to:

1. Focus more solely on my studies without worrying about working full-time and taking on a full-time study load .

2. It gave me the confidence that I should believe in myself and my abilities, because someone else did (Cellarmasters) first.

3. Finally, it allowed me to invest whole-heartedly in the degree (buying textbooks I otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford, engage with extra-curricular learning opportunities (volunteering in schools) etc.

The scholarship has meant an immense mode of support, and I am thankful every day to the Cellarmasters team who provided me with such generosity. ”

Thanks for the update Semra – exciting times ahead!

For Nuriootpa High School student Jacob Judd, life has not been without challenges. Diagnosed with autism in the early years of high school, Jacob is working hard to fulfil his goal of being a Junior Primary School teacher.

As the Kicking Goals Scholar for 2019, Jacob will receive financial assistance for Year 12 as well as ongoing mentoring from John Hughes. At the end of Year 12, additional funds will available to support his further education, educational aids or transport.

“It was so important for me to win this scholarship. I now have a great opportunity to be mentored by John Hughes for the next 2 years. I hope to use John’s experience and knowledge throughout my journey of completing Year 12, and continuing into university.  The scholarship funds will help me to update my laptop, purchase text books and subsidise travel for next year” said Jacob.

For winemaker John Hughes, the Kicking Goals scholarship has been realisation of a dream to support students with a disability by providing funding and support to assist them in their transition from school into the workplace or further studies.

“I am delighted to have Jacob on board as the third Kicking Goals scholar. I look forward to mentoring him, and helping guide him towards his goal of becoming a Junior Primary Teacher.’ said John Hughes.

“Foundation Barossa is proud to support kids like Jacob and is grateful for the ongoing support of John Hughes and the other businesses and individuals involved in the Kicking Goals Scholarship. We look forward to supporting Jacob as he finishes school and continues on to further studies,” said Nick Slape, Chair of Foundation Barossa.

Applications for the Kicking Goals Scholarship 2020 will open in January 2020.
