Educational Scholarships and Traineeship

Our educational scholarships and traineeship support students in the Barossa who have a barrier to study. They aim to ensure that student’s circumstances don’t hamper their aspirations.

Through these, Foundation Barossa helps people contribute to the future of the community.

Eligibility criteria for applicants

  • Students enrolled in or intending to enrol in a recognised course of study in the following calendar year (i.e. apply for a scholarship in September 2024 for study to be undertaken in 2025).
  • Course must be at an Australian educational institution that is recognised by Australian educational authorities.
  • Applicants with a connection to the Barossa.
  • The scholarships and traineeship are also open to students studying in a flexible learning environment.
  • Previous recipients must have completed their acquittal to apply for the following year.

Scholarship duration

  • All scholarships and the traineeship are for one calendar year. The exception is the Kicking Goals Scholarship (see the details above)
  • Students who study for multiple years are encouraged to re-apply annually.

Assessment criteria

  •  A panel will asses all applications based on equity and merit:

Equity would cover students who are:

  • experiencing socio-economic disadvantage or hardship
  • have a disability
  • other reasons, including special needs from age, gender, ethnicity, or geographic location.

Merit

  • The basis of merit can be academic but also include non-academic criteria where sufficiently connected with the educational objectives (e.g. artistic ability where the artistic pursuit is part of the curriculum)

What can I use the scholarship for?

  • Course fees that are not covered by HECS debts.
  • Study related living and boarding costs.
  • Study related travel costs.
  • Study related costs such as laptops, equipment, and mandatory compliance checks (e.g. working with children).

How to apply

  • Applicants must complete the online application form, including contact details from two referees. The referees should have direct knowledge of the educational ability and aptitude of the student.
  • Applications need to be completed online and submitted by 5pm on 30 September 2024. Late applications will not be accepted.

Key dates for educational scholarships

  • Applications open 1 September 2024.
  • Applications close 30 September 2024.
  • Interviews conducted in October, as required.
  • Scholarships and traineeship offered by 31 October 2024.
  • Scholarships paid in February 2025 (subject to enrolment in the relevant course).

Assessment process

  • Foundation Barossa will evaluate and approve educational scholarship and traineeship applications.
  • To ensure Foundation Barossa makes an informed decision, we may ask applicants to provide further information.
  • We will notify all applicants in writing about the outcome of their application.
  • All successful applicants will be required to sign a Foundation Barossa Educational Scholarships and Traineeship contract and provide an acquittal on the use of the funds.

Educational scholarship payments and tax

  • We encourage scholarship recipients to seek their own advice from Centrelink, the Australian Taxation Office, or a financial adviser for advice regarding their financial situation.
  • Successful applicants will be required to provide proof of enrolment before we pay the scholarship.

Deferral of education scholarships

  • Scholarships and traineeships cannot be deferred.
  • Recipients can re-apply the following year.

Educational Scholarships and Traineeship

Foundation Barossa offers the following education scholarships. We will determine the most appropriate scholarship for the applicant based on their application.

Kicking Goals Scholarship

Available for: students in Year 11 and 12

Overview: This scholarship provides some financial assistance ($500 per year) for Year 11 and 12 students with a disability. The student also receives mentoring from John Hughes focused on further education and employment. At the end of Year 12, there will be up to $3,500 available for the student to spend on further education, educational aids, transport, or costs associated with engagement in employment.

Thomas Scholarship

Available for: students in Year 12, or who have completed Year 12 and are studying or working (full or part-time)

Overview: This scholarship supports students who might not otherwise go on to TAFE and university. The scholarships can pay for tuition, accommodation, equipment, travel, or other study-related costs. Each scholarship provides up to $6,000, which may be shared between several students.

Applicants should be considering a course relevant to the needs of the Barossa wine industry, although other studies will be considered.

Dr Ben Baker Memorial Scholarship Fund

Available for: students in Year 12, or who have completed Year 12

Overview: This scholarship provides $1,000 to a student studying a course in (human) health. Applicants should have a strong connection to the Barossa community, and an interest in future work in the Barossa in their chosen health field.

Elderton Winemaking Excellence Scholarship

Available for: students enrolled in an undergraduate winemaking degree

Overview: This scholarship provides $3,000 towards a Bachelor of Oenology or Viticulture at an Australian University. The Elderton Wines team will mentor the students, giving them the building blocks for a winemaking career. They are also to undertake a vintage placement at Elderton.

Concordis Social Inclusion Trust

Available for: students in Year 12, or who have completed Year 12

Overview: This scholarship is designed to address homelessness, mental health, disability, or other areas of disadvantage by providing scholarships for:

  • Students affected by these issues.
  • Students working in these key areas of disadvantage.

The Barossa Co-op Retail Traineeship

Available for: students in Year 10-12 and mature age students

Overview: This paid one-year traineeship provides a pathway to a career in retail. The traineeship will support students who might otherwise not go to TAFE. All training will be completed onsite at the Barossa Co-op.
