Barossa Bands Scholarship

Each Barossa Bands scholarship provides:

  • up to $750 for any one year
  • mentoring by a local community band.

Applications for the 2024 Barossa Bands Scholarship are closed for 2024.

What is the Barossa Bands Scholarship?

Foundation Barossa launched the Barossa Bands Scholarship in 2015 following the disbanding of the Barossa Junior Brass Band. The aim of the Scholarship is to enable and promote the tuition of young, talented musicians who will be mentored by one of the local community bands. Each year, we award up to 2 scholarships, each worth $750. The Barossa Band Scholarship fund remains active and is open to receive further contributions through fundraising, donations or bequests. Donations to this fund are tax-deductible.

Foundation Barossa awards the scholarship from the Education Trust Account. We invest donations made to the Barossa Band Fund and gift the income generated from the investment as a scholarship. This ensures that the scholarship can continue in perpetuity.

Who does the Scholarship assist?

The Scholarship will provide financial support for a student in years 7 to 10 from the Barossa region. Each scholarship will provide initially up to $750 for one year, which is available to 2 recipients. Recipients can use the scholarships for travel, tuition, uniforms, instrument purchase or hire. The scholarship will include mentoring by a local community band.

Meet our 2023 Barossa Bands Scholarship Recipients

Our 2023 recipients were Thomas (Tom) Jaeger and Bethany Lobegeiger.

Tom, from Eudunda Area School, has been learning the alto saxophone since 2020. “The scholarship will help fund music lessons that I have each week,” said Tom. “The lessons help me improve my sight reading and enable me to play better. I will also use it to buy a new music book that I will start using soon.”

Bethany, a student at Nuriootpa High School is learning to play the clarinet and currently hires a clarinet from the school. She would like to buy her own clarinet, so she can keep practicing over the school holidays as she currently has to return it over the Summer.

“I would love to have my own instrument to care for,” said Bethany.

On hearing about her scholarship success, Bethany said, “Oh wow! This is incredible. I plan to buy my clarinet in the holidays, so I don’t have to hire one from school. I’m really enjoying learning clarinet and have just joined the school concert band. Miss Samain is a great teacher!”
