In 2015, the successful Barossa producer, Elderton Wines, announced the introduction of the Elderton Winemaking Excellence Scholarship administered through Foundation Barossa. Cameron and Allister Ashmead of Elderton Wines, are now pleased to announce the second recipient of the scholarship is Sam Rogers.

“We are excited to announce that Sam Rogers is the recipient of the 2017 Elderton Winemaking Excellence Scholarship,” said Cameron Ashmead, Co-Managing Director of Elderton Wines.

“This scholarship gives us the opportunity to give back to the great Barossa community that continues to support our small family winery. We feel that offering mentoring and vintage placements to the successful students also provides them with great building blocks for their career.”

Originally from the Riverland, Sam is currently studying a Bachelor of Oenology and Viticulture at the University of Adelaide, in his second year of the four year degree. Sam has previously completed Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) and has chosen to pursue a future in winemaking with a determination to bring a sustainable and environmentally conscious focus to the industry.

The scholarship funds, administered by Foundation Barossa, aim to reward and encourage achievement and greater effort in winemaking education. The Elderton Winemaking Excellence Scholarship is awarded to a passionate student undertaking a Bachelor of Oenology (Winemaking) at an Australian University, entering their first through fourth year of study. The scholarship provides financial assistance of up to $3000 towards educational expenses along with opportunities for the student to receive mentoring from the team at Elderton Wines.

“I am excited to be the recipient of this scholarship as it will help to shape my future as a winemaker in the Barossa Valley. Not only will the scholarship provide me with the opportunity to learn through hands on experience and mentorship, but the funding will aid my studies at university. I look forward to working with Elderton in my final year at university, and I am grateful for the unique opportunity to work in this highly regarded, family owned winery,” Sam said.

The inaugural recipient of the scholarship, Thomas Darmody, enjoyed his experience at Elderton during vintage earlier in 2016 and is completing his final year of Bachelor of Oenology and Viticulture at the University of Adelaide.

Applications for the 2018 Elderton Winemaking Excellence Scholarship will early in 2017, with further information to be available through Foundation Barossa.

Barossa arts and culture is set for a boost with the establishment of the Peter Lehmann Arts and Education Trust. Initially proposed in 2014 to honour Mr. Lehmann’s legacy, the Trust’s major focus is an annual Arts and Education Award that provides support for arts and music programs that contribute to the culture and heritage of the Barossa region.

Barossa based Artist Marnie Wark Gilder and Dayna Brassil from the Barossa Regional Gallery met with Margaret Lehmann recently to discuss the Trust and how the Award will support both individuals and groups within the region.

“I am keen to see the Trust support a diverse array of arts projects across the region, from music and theater performance to visual arts and creative education programs for young people” said Margaret Lehmann, “It will be great to see new music and art being made in the Barossa for both locals and visitors to enjoy” she added.

Long-time beneficiaries of Margaret and Peter Lehmann’s generosity, the Barossa Regional Gallery and the Hill and Son Grand Organ, which is situated at the Gallery, will continue to benefit with Margaret Lehmann providing funds to support further arts and education programs in the gallery over the next twelve months.

“Financial support through Margaret and the Trust means we can really grow our programs at the Gallery “ said Gallery Project Officer, Dayna Brassil “We can offer better arts learning programs, grow audiences for our exhibitions and organ concerts and see more great art and music created and presented locally”, she added. Margaret Lehmann along with the Thomas Foundation provided Initial funds for the Trust, with other community members also contributing cash over the last two years. A Trust Committee has been established, which includes Margaret Lehmann and sons David and Phillip Lehmann along with a representative from Foundation Barossa who is administering the Trust. Further development of the Award and raising additional funds to support arts and cultural development are the first two major priorities for the Committee, ensuring the award celebrates the late Peter Lehmann’s two great loves, the arts and the Barossa.

This week a new Arts and Educational Trust to be named in honour of the late Peter Lehmann was launched at a lunch hosted by Mrs Margaret Lehmann and Mr David Thomas, OAM, of The Thomas Foundation.
The Peter Lehmann Arts and Educational Trust will start with funding of $200,000 from the Lehmann Hess Foundation funds.
Making the announcement, Mrs Lehmann said, “The intention of the Trust is to encourage, nurture and sustain the Barossa’s cultural identity. Lehmann Hess decided that Foundation Barossa is the most appropriate guardian for these funds.”

Keynote speaker at the lunch, David Thomas, who, through his own philanthropic foundation, has been a huge supporter of Foundation Barossa, then made a surprise announcement, offering another $250,000 to the Trust with a challenge to the Barossa to match it over the next two years.
The 180 strong enthusiastic audience, with encouragement from MC, Peter Sawrey, then pledged a further $ 39171 towards meeting that challenge.
Anita Bowen, Chair of Foundation Barossa said she is overjoyed and overwhelmed at the response to the announcement.
“This is such a landmark for our organisation and a Trust such as this is so important to the Barossa and our way of life.
“Our target for this fund is $750,000 and in one day, we are, in effect, more than halfway there with in excess of $500,000 already raised. It’s an amazing expression of confidence and Barossa generosity,” she said.
